
San Francisco designer Michael Vanderbyl has gained international prominence in the design field as a practitioner, educator, critic and advocate. As designer of the Archetype collection for Boyd he embodies the bold, modern attitude and lifestyle that his designs reflect.
Vanderbyl brings to Boyd his expertise as one of the world's foremost multi-disciplined designers. Established in 1973, Vanderbyl Design has gained expertise in graphics, packaging, interiors, showrooms, furniture, textiles and fashion apparel. The firm's client list has included American Institute of Architects, America One/American's Cup Challenge, Esprit, HBF, IBM, Keilhauer Industries, Polaroid, The Robert Talbott Company, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Walt Disney Company.
The Institute of Business Designers (IBD) has honored him twice for his designs in executive office furnishings. Vanderbyl's line of home textiles for Espirit was named in TIME Magazine's "Best of '87" design issue. His showroom designs have received awards from Interiors magazine, American Institute of Architects (AIA) and American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). His graphic work is part of the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt Museum of the Smithsonian Institute, the Library of Congress and the museum Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. Vanderbyl also was part of a four-man show at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the first graphic design exhibit at the museum.
In 1994, Metropolitan Home magazine inducted Vanderbyl into their Design 100 Hall of Fame. He has been featured in numerous publications, such as Interior Design, Interiors, Graphis, The New York Times and Metropolis. Books published in Japan, Australia, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Argentina and the U.S. have all featured Vanderbyl's designs. He was the subject of an interview on the PBS series, "The Creative Mind," and he and his bed sheet collection for Esprit were featured in an interview on NBC's "Today Show."
Vanderbyl holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from The California College of Arts and Crafts, where he is currently Dean of the School of Design. He has served as visiting professor at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Kent State University, and the Universities of Cincinnati, Kansas and Washington.
Interior and graphic design organizations in more than two dozen U.S. cities from New York to Los Angeles, and as far away as New Zealand and Australia, have invited Vanderbyl to address their membership or evaluate their competitions. He chaired the Presidential Jury for the 1992 National Endowment for the Arts Presidential Design Awards and holds advisory positions with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Interiors magazine. He also served as consultant to the United States Information Agency on "Design USA: A Cultural Exchange Exhibit with the USSR."
